
Dr. Aimee Lang
Dr. Aimée Lang is a research biologist within Southwest Fisheries Science Center’s Marine Mammal and Turtle Division. In this role, she leads genomics projects on diverse marine mammal species, serves on the International Whaling Commission’s Scientific Committee, and organizes shore-based surveys used to monitor eastern gray whale abundance and calf production.
Aimée first began studying gray whales in 2002, when she began her Ph.D. work through the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. She spent the next six summers collecting photographs and biopsies from the gray whales that feed off Sakhalin Island, Russia. After earning her PhD in 2010, she transitioned to the Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC) in La Jolla, CA, working first as a postdoctoral researcher and then as a contractor. Today, Aimée is a research biologist within SWFSC’s Marine Mammal and Turtle Division.
