Dr. Shane Gero
Shane Gero is a Canadian whale biologist and the Biology Lead for Project CETI, a nonprofit organization, National Geographic Society flagship Program and the most interdisciplinary interspecies communication initiative. In 2005, he founded The Dominica Sperm Whale Project and for the last 20 years has spent thousands of hours in the company of the sperm whale families off the Caribbean island of Dominica.

Gero’s research is motivated by a desire to understand animal societies, communication systems, the origins of culture, and to get people to protect their deep ocean home.
The Dominica Sperm Whale Project’s decades-long research and unparalleled dataset on the Eastern Caribbean sperm whale community laid the foundation for the launch of Project CETI in 2020. Project CETI is an interdisciplinary nonprofit that applies advanced machine learning and state-of-the-art robotics to listen to and decipher sperm whale communication.
Gero loves to share the whale’s stories and his research has been featured in newspapers, magazines, and on television around the world, including National Geographic and Disney’s Secrets of the Whales. He is also Scientist-in-Residence at Ottawa’s Carleton University.
